Description of the Volunteer Opportunity: 

Tutors volunteer during or after school (at the library) to assist elementary and middle school children with school work. If needed, tutors receive training to assist children challenged by learning disabilities.

Tutors work under the direction of classroom teachers who supply materials and direction to the intervention. Commonly volunteer tutors lead reading circles or assist with homework help. Volunteer commitments are usually 1-2 hours per day/2 days per week.

Embudo Valley Tutoring Association targets the most vulnerable children to receive the support they need: these children are learning disabled, more than 1 year behind in school work, socio-economically disadvantaged, and live in rural areas.

Who Will Be Impacted Through This Project: 

EVTA works with students in Rio Arriba Count and Des Montes, Taos. EVTA targets the most vulnerable children to receive the support they need: these children are learning disabled, more than 1 year behind in school work, socio-economically disadvantaged, and live rurally. Most students are elementary age, some are middle school, and occasionally we tutor a high school student or GED candidate.

Training and orientation for tutor.
Referrals to children and communication with families.
Arrange for tutoring site, schedule, and secure materials.
Ongoing monitoring and support of the tutoring relationship.

Additional Requirements: 

Tutor needs to have a background in education for literacy tutoring: minimum educational assistant with several years experience. Certified teachers are preferred.

For math and science tutoring, educational assistant is sufficient for lower level math (1-3 grade). For grade 4 and up, either certified teachers or professional scientists will be able to explain the math curriculum to the children.
