History

Groundworks New Mexico was founded on the idea that by working together, rather than apart, we will have a greater impact in our beloved state. We were also founded to fill a defined need in our state. According to four separate research efforts, New Mexico needed a coordinated and networked entity to advance the needs and capacity of its social sector, and that is exactly why we’re here today.

In 2020, the New Mexico Association of Grantmakers adopted three distinct but complementary programs — the Center for Nonprofit Excellence (CNPE), the New Mexico Impact Investing Collaborative (NMIIC) and the Zone Grant Collaborative. These founding programs, which collectively have over 40 years of experience in New Mexico’s social sector, saw value in aligning efforts formally.

After our founding, we spent a year developing our organizational structure, brand, and mission. We spoke to members, community leaders, local and national partners, and other organizations who are doing similar work in their state. What emerged, was Groundworks New Mexico — a social impact organization to help those already working to make New Mexico a better place to live, work, and invest in.

Today we serve as a single, neutral entity that serves to connect, strengthen, and advocate for New Mexico’s social impact organizations while unleashing the full potential of working together.
