Description of the Volunteer Opportunity: 

Individuals from area businesses and the local community, including retirees and college students, are invited to commit 1 hour each week to tutor two kindergarten students, one-on-one, for 30-minutes each.

The tutor and student work on reading, writing, and skills development aligned with the student’s abilities and current classroom curriculum. A great group volunteer option, popular with busy professionals, is to form teams of up to four tutors, lessening the time commitment to 1 hour per month.

Who Will Be Impacted Through This Project: 

In 2014-2015 more than 300 kindergartners participated in Albuquerque Reads. Historically, at the end of the 9-month school year, 80% of students at participating schools are reading at or above grade level; the remaining 20% are reading near grade level.
