Dates Volunteer is Needed:
Sept. 1, 2019 - May 20, 2019 (3 hours - 2 times a month)
Description of the Volunteer Opportunity:
Support bereaved youth and their families, by becoming a volunteer bereavement facilitator.
Volunteer bereavement facilitators lead peer support groups for children who have had a loved one die. After the training, new volunteers are assigned an age group and group night. The groups meet Tues. or Wed. evenings in the north valley or Thurs. in Rio Rancho. Your time commitment on a group night is 5:15 - 8:15 pm. New volunteers are placed with an experienced facilitator. Children's groups do a variety or activities, games, and crafts to help facilitate conversation about the loss. We also need facilitators to lead the adult support groups.
Who Will Be Impacted Through This Project:
Grieving families are directly impacted, by learning coping skills and being with a peer group who understands what they are going through. The community is impacted, because when children get support, they are less likely to act out in destructive ways; like substance use and criminal behaviors. Volunteers are impacted because over time they will witness the hope and healing of participants.
