Volunteer Supports Seniors Struggling in Silence

Board President Goes Beyond the Call of Duty.

Joan Punt exemplifies the ideal volunteer and board member: she's engaged, committed, goes beyond the call of duty, and truly cares about seniors. Joan has served in leadership roles at so many places: Rotary Club of Albuquerque, Soroptimist International of Albuquerque, Silver Horizons, and the Albuquerque Opera Guild of The Santa Fe Opera. She has helped with more fundraising and service delivery projects than can be listed here. Suffice it to say, Joan Punt is an amazing individual who is dedicated to volunteer service, helping so many people in need.

Currently, Joan serves as the Board President of Silver Horizons. At Silver Horizons, Joan has helped the organization grow from serving just a hundred, or so, seniors each month, to an organization that serves over 3,500 low-income seniors every single month, plus about 1,200 grandchildren many of these seniors are raising! Some weeks, Joan volunteers about 30 hours a week. Sometimes, it's just an hour or two, here and there. Every day, Joan cares about her community, and the seniors who are too often struggling in silence.

Under Joan's leadership, each year Silver Horizons:

  • helps more than 33,600 seniors, most of whom live on less than $10,000 annual income
  • distributes more than 1,480,000 pounds of food to more than 2,000 households (enough food for 1,234,000 meals)
  • receives more than 28,000 food pantry visits

Silver Horizons provides groceries to seniors in Bernalillo, Sandoval and Valencia counties, primarily through food pantries and home deliveries of groceries.

Silver Horizons needs more volunteers like Joan. Please contact Ron at [email protected] to learn how you can get involved.
