Preventing Prescription Drug Abuse Grant Application - deadline March 25

The Cardinal Health Foundation is inviting non-profit organizations in seven U.S. cities to apply for grant funding to support local efforts to prevent the abuse and misuse of prescription medications.

Priority consideration will be given to programs that aim to increase awareness of the dangers of misusing and abusing prescription medications; and to those that educate communities about the proper use and disposal of prescription drugs.

Registered 501 (c) (3) organizations in the following cities - which have a high concentration of Cardinal Health employees - are invited to apply for grants ranging from $5,000 - $15,000:
• Albuquerque, N.M.
• Central Ohio
• El Paso, Texas
• LaVergne, Tenn.
• Little Rock, Ark.
• Northern Chicago, Ill. (Lake, McHenry and Kenosha counties)
• Radcliff, Ken.

A variety of non-profit organizations will be considered for this funding, including schools, community organizations, drug taskforces or other service or civic groups.

Through the Generation Rx initiative, The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy and the Cardinal Health Foundation together developed a comprehensive suite of materials to help health care providers, pharmacist, parents, teachers, youth group leaders and other concerned citizens educate teen and adult audiences about the dangers of prescription drug abuse. Grant applicants are encouraged to incorporate these materials, available at www.cardinalhealth.com/generationrx, into their proposals.

“Unintentional prescription drug poisoning has emerged as the second leading cause of accidental death in the United States, and at the same time, many teens and adults perceive these medications to be safer and less addictive than ‘illegal' narcotics,â€ù said Jessica Lineberger, community relations manager for Cardinal Health. “This grant funding will empower grassroots initiatives to raise awareness of the dangers of prescription drug abuse, so we can stop this deadly activity before it starts.â€ù

Interested applicants can find complete grant program criteria and can apply for grant funding online at www.cardinalhealth.com/community. The deadline for applications is March 25, 2011.
