MindMatters: Erase the Stigma

MindMatters: Erase the Stigma

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) New Mexico is working with local business partners to host an annual Education and Awareness campaign for mental illness at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in early October. This event, "MindMatters, Erase the Stigma" will provide food, music, wine tasting, information and talks as a way of encouraging people to attend and learn more about mental illness.

Our goal is to show people that mental illness is more prevalent in New Mexico than they think, but stigma (the fear of what people think,) causes many to NOT get the help they need. Mental illness does not discriminate. It impacts every age, race, sex, and socioeconomic group. One in four adults in New Mexico will experience some form of mental illness in their lifetime. Nearly 60% will NOT seek help for their disability due to the negative stigma of mental illness. Of the 40% that do seek help, Hispanics access mental health services at half the rate of the rest of the population. In other words, mental health is a growing problem locally and a bigger problem for Hispanics.

The goal for this event is to erase the stigma of mental illness in New Mexico and make people more aware of all the resources available. Come join us to support this great cause.
