Description of the Volunteer Opportunity:
The Albuquerque Reads Program is a partnership between the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce and Albuquerque Public schools. The ABQ Reads program is in three Albuquerque elementary schools and focuses on literacy development. The program pairs one community volunteer with one kindergarten student. By spending about an hour and half each week during the school year, tutors make a significant difference in children's lives - especially in their literacy fluency. Tutors are able to choose from three different schools located throughout the city, and they are also able to choose from three different days throughout the week . Every tutoring session consists of:
. A 15-minute lesson preview with the site coordinator.
. Two 30-minute tutoring sessions with two students
. 10 minutes of wrap-up time
Each session includes time for reading, writing and skill development. The program includes an easy-to-follow curriculum with specified books and activities.
Who Will Be Impacted Through This Project:
Impacted most are kindergarten students at three Albuquerque public, Title I schools. All three schools also qualify under the Community Eligible Provision which provides free meals to their entire school body because of the high poverty rates within the schools' districts. The three ABQ Reads schools had an average poverty rate of 69% for the 2015-16 school year.
