Dates Volunteer is Needed:
Flexible. Tutoring program starts January and runs to end of the school year in May.
Description of the Volunteer Opportunity:
We strive to provide 1:1 tutoring at least once/week for Horizons ABQ program students. We are expanding our tutoring program to include more locations with more times to enable increased student participation. We have had great success with volunteers from the Albuquerque area that are retired teachers, business people, student teachers from UNM and many others that enjoyed working with children to improve their reading, writing and math skills for homework, school projects and general literacy as well as working to help them hone their study skills ( time management, planning, note taking, problem solving ). Our summer program data shows marked improvement in student academics and we are working to build on that to augment academic work during the school year. Our main targeted time slots are after school and early evening with some potential early morning before-school time slots.
Who Will Be Impacted Through This Project:
Horizons Albuquerque, an affiliate of Horizons National, is a tuition free academic enrichment program that addresses the achievement gap and summer learning loss for public school students from low-income families. Each we serve more than 150 students in a six-week intensive summer academy, supplemented by family engagement workshops and after school tutoring throughout the school year.
