Description of the Volunteer Opportunity:
Volunteers are needed to help with Equine Assisted Activities (therapeutic horseback riding & other horse related activities) serving the disabled communities of greater Santa Fe/Albuquerque. Our clients range from small children to older adults with a broad spectrum of physical, cognitive, mental and/or emotional disabilities. Each class is limited to one participant, and lasts for 30 minutes.
The main needs are for "Horse Leaders" - these individuals lead or assist the client in leading/guiding the horse during the class. Horse experience isn't required - we will train you! We also need "Sidewalkers" - these individuals walk beside the client while they are mounted on the horse. The Sidewalker may assist the client with communication, riding skills and balance. The job of Sidewalker can be as involved as actually helping the client to stay centered on the horse's back while riding. Many clients require 2 Sidewalkers for their session!!
Who Will Be Impacted Through This Project:
The disabled communities of greater Santa Fe and Albuquerque.
