Description of the Volunteer Opportunity:

Join our Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring team today! Our volunteer reading mentors help K-4 elementary school students enlarge their world by exposing them to a love of books. Reading mentors commit to spending one hour, one day a week to mentor K-4 students in one-on-one sessions for a school year. We volunteer in Albuquerque, Belen, Bernalillo, and Rio Rancho Public Schools. Over nearly two decades, Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring has consistently improved students’ reading ability, academic performance and attitudes about learning. The program taps the tremendous potential of committed volunteers who have the time, patience and life experience to make a profound difference in the lives of children. Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring takes advantage of the special relationships that develop across generations to reap benefits for both children and adults.

Areas of Interest:
Education and Literacy
Who Will Be Impacted Through This Project:

K-4 public school students - teachers select students they feel will benefit from our 6-step literacy approach and the one-on-one mentoring relationship.
Older adult volunteers - reading mentors utilize their time and talents. Volunteering is beneficial to combat depression; counteract stress, anger and anxiety; provides a sense of purpose; and helps the volunteer stay physically healthy!

Is This an Ongoing Opportunity?:
Yes
Minimum Age of Volunteers:
50
Nonprofit Will Provide:

Oasis will provide a full day training in our 6-step literacy approach for elementary students; a program handbook, cloth bag, and supplies; ongoing support with bi-monthly training and meetings; and district volunteer fingerprint clearance and necessary paperwork.

Additional Requirements:

Volunteers should have a love of reading and a love of children.
Oasis is recruiting enthusiastic, patient, compassionate, interesting, persistent and humorous volunteers. After registration, volunteers are trained, a fingerprint background clearance is processed, and then they are placed in a school to volunteer for one hour weekly, for two years. Typically, volunteers mentor the same student for one year.
