Description of the Volunteer Opportunity: 

Community volunteers work one-on-one with struggling 1st & 2nd grade readers to achieve the goal of creating competent and confident readers in an effort to narrow the achievement gap between our under-performing students and their proficient peers. Volunteers receive a training session and are supported by a program coordinator. Volunteers are required to have an effective APS background check.

Who Will Be Impacted Through This Project: 

48 1st and 2nd grade students will be positively impacted through the Community Academic Mentoring Program. These are students who will receive an additional 2 hours per week of one-on-one reading support through our volunteers.

Nonprofit Will Provide: 

The APS Education Foundation will provide the grant to fund the program.
Refreshments are often served to our volunteers.
