Staff Attorney

Job Description
Main Areas of Responsibility: 

New Mexico Legal Aid is seeking a staff attorney to be based in Las Vegas, New Mexico. The attorney will be part of NMLA’s northern regional team with the offices located in Santa Fe and Taos, and will handle cases across the northern New Mexico region. Staff attorneys in NMLA’s northern regional team handle a variety of types of cases, including family law, housing law, consumer issues, domestic violence, and public benefits.

Additional Areas of Responsibility: 

The types of services that NMLA’s attorneys provide include full legal representation, limited representation through legal advice or brief services; assistance to self-represented litigants; negotiations and alternative dispute resolution; development and/or coordination of volunteer (pro bono) assistance; provision of legal advice; and outreach and community education.

Other Information/Requirements: 

Active license in New Mexico; or eligible for admission by examination; or licensed in another state and eligible for New Mexico’s legal aid providers limited licensing. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Capacity to manage multiple tasks and a significant caseload. Capability to work independently as well as on a team. Ability to build collaborative relationships within the organization and within the community. Willingness to travel. Proficiency in Spanish is a plus.
