Main Areas of Responsibility:
The Service-Learning Department at SVA works to provide students with transformative learning experiences through community involvement, community-based research, and project implementation. This program is grounded in critical social justice principles, and service-learning teachers should have a well-developed social justice framework that embraces anti-racist, anti-oppression values.
Additional Areas of Responsibility:
Program structure: ninth graders volunteer in elementary school classrooms, tenth graders are placed at a local nonprofit, eleventh graders identify any business or organization with which to complete an internship focused on career exploration, and twelfth graders research, design, and implement a senior capstone project. Each Service-Learning Teacher manages a specific grade level and facilitates a section of the senior capstone project.
