Main Areas of Responsibility:
The Director of Public Policy of the ACLU of New Mexico (ACLU-NM) leads the organization's efforts to promote policy-making that advances civil liberties at all levels of government, with emphasis on New Mexico state government. The Director carries out these duties in coordination with ACLU-NM legal, communications, public education, border rights, and development programs. The position is based in Albuquerque and reports to the Associate Director.
Additional Areas of Responsibility:
The Director develops and implements plans to change laws, regulations, policies, and procedures that influence civil liberties in New Mexico. This involves research; forming strategic alliances; mobilizing support; and lobbying government officials and legislative bodies. While much of the work focuses on the passage of state legislation, some strategies require the Director to advocate before school boards, city councils, and executive branch officials, among other levels of government.
