Midwives at the Edges
To reduce maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity globally, while making shalom health — spiritual, physical, and emotional health — a reality, and leveraging faith-based communities to bring this to fruition. In New Mexico, it is our mission to close the maternity care deserts by responding to the immediate need for care; training community-rooted people through to licensure, thus creating a sustainable workforce; and equipping faith communities to recognize and respond to maternal mental health needs.
Desert Midwives (New Mexico) - Beginning with Mora, San Miguel, and Los Alamos counties, we are responding to the maternal healthcare crisis and working toward creating a sustainable workforce of Licensed Midwives in New Mexico's maternity care deserts (1/3 of our counties).
Midwives of Hope and Peace (Pakistan) - This program delivers two workshops annually and teaches vital skills, such as neonatal resuscitation, clean birth, and preventing and stopping postpartum hemorrhage, to traditional midwives from across the Middle East and North Africa.
Equipping Skilled Community Midwives (Myanmar) - We are working with a group of skilled community midwives to provide continuing education and equip them to create a training program for traditional midwives.
Women's Health Workshops for Traditional Midwives (Peru) - M@tE works with traditional midwives from 6 tribes of the Peruvian Amazon, learning from them and educating them in subjects such as conception, clean birth, neonatal resuscitation, preventing and stopping postpartum hemorrhage.
Midwife Mobile Stats - A free app that we offer for midwives to track their birth statistics.
Sacred Moments - a research project documenting and exploring sacred moments in the midwifery student-preceptor relationship.
Desert Midwives research - a series of papers created with the intention of documenting a replicable process for responding to the maternity care desert crisis.
