Event Helping Albuquerque Homebuyers - May 1-2

Wells Fargo Launches HomeLIFT Program

Mayor Richard J. Berry joins Wells Fargo, NeighborWorks America®, and its affiliate Homestart to announce the Albuquerque Wells Fargo HomeLIFT® program, a $4.75 million initiative to boost homeownership and strengthen local neighborhoods.

Of the $4.75 million committed by Wells Fargo, $4.1 million will go toward down payment assistance grants and program support to help potential homebuyers overcome the barrier of making a sufficient down payment.

“Making homeownership more affordable will enable more hard-working families and individuals to achieve homeownership and help make Albuquerque neighborhoods even stronger,” said Mayor Berry.  “This innovative public-private collaboration will make a significant difference for families and neighborhoods through sustainable homeownership.”
The HomeLIFT program can help local mortgage-ready homebuyers realize their dream of owning a home.
$15,000 down payment assistance grants will be available to eligible homebuyers with annual incomes that do not exceed 120 percent of the Albuquerque area median income – which is about $71,300 for a family of four – with income maximums varying depending on family size and type of loan. Eligible homebuyers must meet certain criteria, including:
  • Completing an 8 hour homebuyer education session with Homestart or other HUD-certified housing counseling agency
  • Committing to live in the home for five years
  • Qualifying for a first mortgage on the property

The down payment assistance grants may be used to buy a home that needs improvements with a new mortgage purchase 203k renovation loan.

“Like many communities, Albuquerque was deeply affected by the economic downturn,” said Lisa Riley, New Mexico/Western Border regional president with Wells Fargo Bank in Albuquerque. “While mortgages are available at relatively low interest rates, many families are unable to buy a home because they struggle with making the down payment. The HomeLIFT® program can help local mortgage-ready homebuyers realize their dream of owning a home.”
