About Us:

Mission/Giving Statement: The New Mexico Humanities Council strengthens our connections with one another and facilitates imaginative explorations of who we are, who we've been, and who we aspire to be.  The New Mexico Humanities Council (NMHC) encourages and supports the humanities by seeking out and funding quality humanities programs for presentation to and participation by diverse public audiences throughout New Mexico. Thought, learning, and experience must be shared. The NMHC is committed to support quality projects and programs which engage humanities scholars and public audiences in a dialogue on topics and issues appropriate to the humanities; that enhance the civic and cultural life of New Mexico's citizens through it projects and programs; provide easy access to quality humanities programs for citizens and communities throughout New Mexico; and to strive for diversity in the humanities disciplines, formats, humanities scholars, and public audiences involved in NMHC projects and programs.

NMHC mission and goals reflect its history, its current relationship with its principal funder, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and sustained commitments by NMHC Board of Directors.

Grantmaking Program Areas:  Humanities Mini Grants; Humanities Regular Grants

Grantmaking Program Area Descriptions:

Humanities:  The Council welcomes applications on any topic addressed from a humanities perspective.  Previously funded projects have dealt with topics ranging from local history and culture to international affairs. Programs are intended primarily for adults who are not full-time students and for families.  They are programs widely advertised and held at times and in locations accessible to the general public.  The programs may vary as widely as New Mexico's communities and audiences.  These programs bring humanities scholars and the public together.  They create a dialogue that enhances the civic and cultural life of the citizens of New Mexico.

Type of Funding/Funding Restrictions:  NMHC funds a number of New Mexican organzations every year, and if your organization is eligible, NMHC will support your efforts, including assisting you with the application process.  Mini-grants are for up to $2,000 and Regular Grants are for more than $2,000. NMHC grants must be matched, which means that other sources must meet at least half of the project's total costs. NMHC does not generally fund performing or visual arts.
