About Us: 

Mission/Giving Statement: The purpose of the Hatton W. Sumners Foundation is to encourage the study, teaching and research into the science and art of self-government, to the end that the American People may understand the fundamental principles of democracy and be guided thereby in shaping governmental policies. To that end, the Foundation supports programs and activities that will result in an increased understanding by the public of the beneifts of individual freedom and civic and personal responsibility, and the corresponding threat to liberty posed by a lack of informed, active participation by citizens at all levels of government.

Grantmaking Program Area Descriptions: Programs and activities that provide involvement in the political process and functions of government, such as mock trials, mock political conventions, mock legislative sessions, and governmental internships, as well as conferences and seminars on relevant public policy issues. Lecture series, seminars, academic contests and other educational programs for young people, educators, professionals and other societal leaders on the relevant principles of American Democratic Self-Government; and Other programs and activities that, in the opinion of the Trustees, meet the obligations of the Foundation's Statement of Purpose (Mission/Giving Statement).

Type of Funding/Funding Restrictions: Grants are made to selected schools, colleges, universitites, and other qualified tax-exempt organizations. The Foundation also considers requests for challenge grants.
